Hello! As the countdown to winter break is on, we still have one week together! This will be a busy week full of fun.
Here are some details:
The Literary Feast
Class Party!
Ordering School Photos
Kiddo Donations
Kimochi Lessons with Ms. Jen
Reading:
This week and next, we'll be wrapping up our winter book clubs. Students got to mix it up with kids from other classes and (potentially) with another teacher. We'll be culminating our book clubs with our literary feast (see above) next Wednesday.
Writing:
We are wrapping up our narrative writing unit. We are taking a harder look at narrative leads by examining the openings of many books, and making plot maps of various stories and Pixar shorts.
Math:
We're nearing the midpoint of our first fraction unit. We have conquered adding and subtracting fractions and are moving into multiplying fractions. Math feels very "5th grade" all of a sudden! Your kids are doing great work with modeling their thinking and learning strategies from one another.
Social Studies:
We wrapped up our unit on Native Americans and have moved into the next unit on Explorers.
Science:
Your kiddos are working hard with Ms. Frazier in Physical Science and will soon be moving to Mr. Spaht's class for Earth Science a couple of weeks after the break. Please note that Mr. Spaht will have a long term sub in place as he goes on paternity leave until April.
That's all for now! Thank you for trusting me with your wonderful kiddos day in and day out. I am so grateful for all they have taught ME!
Have a great break, and I wish you all the best for a happy new year!
Bethany
Here are some details:
The Literary Feast
- As a culminating project for our Interpretation Book Clubs, we will be holding a Literary Feast on Wednesday, December 19th from 12:45-1:55pm. Students are being asked to bring in food items representing their books.
- Here are some important points:
- Students are fully responsible for bringing the food ready to be served along with serving utensils. We have spent time brainstorming and assigning appropriate foods in class, so your children should know exactly what is expected. Please ask your children for more details. Students should bring enough to serve 8-10 people.
- If it is possible to bring food in disposable/recyclable containers, it would make things easier for us and for your children. If items need to return home, please make sure they are labeled.
- We are in need of plates, napkins, and eating utensils. If there are a few parents who can provide these items, that would be appreciated. Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know.
- Students will bring their food to their homeroom classrooms at the beginning of the school day and they will help us set up for the feast immediately following lunch.
- Please let us know if you have any questions regarding any of the above.
Class Party!
- It's time to party! Next Friday, December 21st, we will have a class celebration. We will have a Pictionary tournament, play other games, possibly watch the movie Elf, and eat snacks. If your child would like to bring in a board game to play with classmates, they are welcome to do so. If you are interested in sending in snacks for the party, please sign up here thanks! Also, if you have the game Pictionary at home and would not mind us borrowing it, please send to school with your child.
Ordering School Photos
- In your child's Wednesday folder yesterday, there were either photos that you ordered from picture day or a small informational flier about how to order photos. Please review that flier if you'd like to order pictures. You can also call Dorian (the photo company) to get their individual access code. The customer service number is 1-800-826-3535. You need to know the teacher name (Womack) and grade (5).
Kiddo Donations
- Kiddo! donation day was last Thursday, December 6th. If you have not yet donated to Kiddo!, please consider donating now. Kiddo! provides amazing programmatic support to our district and opens the door for art, music, physical education, drama and poetry in our district. Without Kiddo!, our district and the educational opportunities for our kids would look incredibly different. We are so lucky your support and the support of Kiddo! Thank you for considering making a donation.
Kimochi Lessons with Ms. Jen
- Every Monday we will be learning the keys to communication with our AMAZING school counselor, Ms. Jen. We learned Key #1 last week, how to get someone's attention (you can remind your children of this when they are saying , "Mom, Mom, Mom..." over and over ;) This week is tone of voice and body language. Please look for information in your child's Wednesday folder to best support them at home.
- Here are some sites to help you child if they/ you wish for them to do some math work over the break. Right now we are working on adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.
- Freckle.com They have a log in and can have at it!
- Khan Academy: Great for review!
