Walk Through the Revolution (Note: I have not yet announced this to the class)
- Thursday, February 28th from 9:00- 11:30
- Walk Through the Revolution is an interactive presentation designed to teach students about the American Revolution through a series of games, activities, skits, and presentations. In 5th grade this year, we will be using the Walk Through the Revolution presentation as a previewing activity to launch our study of the American Revolution.
- An invitation to join us in our Walk Through the Revolution presentation went home with your child today. Please come for all or part of the program if you can!
- Preparing for the presentation at home
- We will prepare for the presentation's skits at school, but students should work on two things at home. First, they would benefit from regularly reading through their cards and striving towards memorization. Second, students need to create their costumes and props at home prior to the event.
- Presentation cards (characters have not yet been assigned)
- For links to copies of your child's character, expert, or American Experiment cards, please click here.
- Costumes
- Costumes do not need to be store bought! Check out this link for costume ideas.
- We do have a limited number of costume pieces (mostly British and Continental soldiers). If you would like to know more or to reserve them, please let me know.
Get Ready Marin!
- Last Friday, the fifth graders at Edna participated in a program offered to all Marin county 5th graders called "Get Ready Marin." In this one hour presentation, students learned about possible disasters in our area and how to take action and lead their family to prepare for emergencies at home.
- As a part of the presentation, students were given a workbook and a homework activity to complete with their families at home. Please schedule a time before this week to review the worksheet with your child and return it by this Thursday. For a copy of the workbook, please see the attachment below.
- For more resources about emergency preparedness in Marin, please check out the Get Ready Marin website.
Picture Retake Day
- The school photographers are scheduled to return on Thursday, January 17th to take photos of any students that are new, missed picture day, or would like a retake. Please let me know if your child missed picture day and you would like them to take their pictures or if you would like a retake. If you would like a retake, please have your child bring their picture packet back to school on retake day and hand it to the photographer. Our class is expected to have picture retakes between 10:15 and 10:45.

Curriculum update:
Math:
- We are continuing our study of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
Reading:
- We are studying point of view and perspective. Through a series of mentor texts, writing from pictures and other means students will examine different points of view on how stories are written as well as a character's perspective.
Writing & Social Studies:
- This week we will launched a new writing unit and began our first research unit on European Explorers. Through a series of research activities, students will learn about the background of famous explorers and trace and learn their routes, distances traveled, and motivations. As a part of their research, students will also explore the immediate and long-term impacts of European Explorers on Native American communities. Throughout this research unit, students will be using mentor texts to develop an understanding of what makes a strong informational piece. They will gather and organize information, plan text features, and apply their understanding of expository structure and writing craft moves to create an essay. They will then review, edit, and publish the piece.
- Our Kiddo!-funded poetry lessons will began this week and continue up until mid-winter break. Our class is already having a great time exploring poetry from a scientific perspective. Today, they learned about the power of odes and strove to draft poems using the words, "destiny," "path," and "light-full."
- For more information about our poetry educators, please check out the link on the main blog page.
Science Rotation:
- Students will be wrapping up their last week of Physical Science with Ms. Frazier and will begin Earth Science with Ms. Chapero (Mr. Spaht's paternity sub) next week.
