All the best,
Bethany
- I appreciate all of the paperwork that has come in so far. Please continue to get those forms in to help us avoid a last minute scramble!
Band and Orchestra Sign Up
- Last week, district music teachers spoke with fifth grade students about the music program. The document attached to the end of this post includes instructions for signing up for the district-wide chorus, band, or orchestra, along with time and location information.
Car Line and Lunch Line Volunteers
- We are still in need of car line and lunch line volunteers for three weeks, beginning next week. A huge thank you to everyone who has signed up to help us already. If you are available in the coming weeks, please sign up here.
Back to School Night
- Back to School Night is this week! I hope to see you on Thursday, September 13th. Meet in the MPR at 5:30 p.m. and then come to Room 31 from 6:00- 6:45 for the classroom presentation.
Library Bookmark Contest
- On Friday, Mill Valley Library Lauren Snell visited Edna Maguire classrooms to talk about the Mill Valley Library fall programming and the 2018 bookmark contest. Entry forms went home today.
Upcoming PTA Events
- Be sure to check out the Edna Weekly each week for information about upcoming events like Movie Night and the Mustang Stampede.
- In reading this week, we'll be reading our read aloud, Save Me a Seat. At Back to School Night, be sure to look for your child’s “iceberg” project that will reflect some of the discussions we are having in class.
Writing
- Our next writing project revolves around growth mindset. For this project, students will first learn about growth mindset by watching several videos and by reading and reflecting on an article describing growth mindset. Then, students will choose from 14 famous leaders and pioneers in their fields who demonstrated a growth mindset. Students will engage in the research process by researching their famous person across a variety of resources (digital articles, print media, and videos) and seeking answers to targeted research questions. While researching, they’ll be on the lookout for ways that the famous person had a growth mindset. Next, they’ll compile their research into an essay. Finally, they will create a pop-art representation of their subject to go along with their essay. Through reading, research, and creativity, students will not only learn about growth mindset, they’ll also develop critical reading and writing skills.
Mathematics
- Last week, we kicked off our first unit of study in Mathematics. From the overview: In this unit, students will be using the study of volume to review and extend a host of skills and concepts related to multiplication. They will use expressions with parentheses to represent different rectangular prisms, find the surface area of boxes, develop multi-digit multiplication strategies to solve real-world and mathematical problems, and revisit multiplication and division through the lens of the area model.
Social Studies
- Our first social studies unit will familiarize students with basic geography concepts (latitude, longitude, landforms, etc.) and offer opportunities to practice reading physical, political, and thematic maps. These skills will be essential throughout the year, as a large part of the fifth grade social studies curriculum focuses on examining early American history through the lens of geography.
- We'll be kicking off a year long project this week, Road Trip, that will aid students in learning the 50 states and capitals in addition to United States landforms, bodies of water, and regions.
- We will delve into the world of Ecosystems, while learning the importance of detailed Scientific sketches and maintaining a Science notebook.
Buddies
- Students will get to meet their 1st grade buddies this week!
