The first few days in class have been exciting and filled with a lot of new information! The Frazier Squad is energetic, eager and ready for all that 5th grade has to offer! We had a blast going through school supplies today and setting up our big, fancy 5th grade binders!
Students received their first official homework assignments today. You can check out their fancy homework planners tonight and check out their assignments. We will write assignments down each Monday so that students and families know what's expected! Every night, Monday through Thursday, students will be expected to read for 30 minutes and record it in their reading log. This is a student responsibility. No parent signature required! :) Each week, students will be given a writing about reading prompt to complete thoughtfully by Friday. I will often post helpful information on this blog about homework to help you at home. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions about homework assignments throughout the year, and encourage your child to ask their questions in class, before Friday rolls around. Here's a breakdown of this week's homework:

Math this Week
We are kicking off our math program with a week of inspirational math! Jo Boaler, a professor at Stanford University who specializes in brain development, growth mindset and how both impact one's success in math, created a wonderful set of lessons to help students think about math and how their brains grow and change over time. Today we watched the video "Brains Grow and Change" to introduce the idea of neural plasticity and how brains can be used and stretched like a muscle. We can all get better at anything we work on consistently and with focus. It just takes time, energy and neural plasticity! If you have a few minutes, check out the video! Her entire website, www.youcubed.org is a wonderful source of information for parents, students and teachers about our brains and math!

Picture Day
Picture day will be this Friday, August 31st, at 10:30am. Students should come to school in their favorite picture day outfit and with their hair just as they like it! :) If your child misses this Friday, take note that make up pictures will be on Wednesday, Sept. 12th.
We need 4 volunteers per grade to assist photographer with getting kids there on time & ready for their photos. Our class will be taking photos during the 4th grade time slot, so if you would like to be there while your child is there, please choose that slot! Thank you for your help!

We are in need of volunteers for carline and new lunch line duties this year! Our volunteer opportunities start on September 17th and run through the first week of October. Don't be wary of the lunch line - we just need some more hands on deck to help lunch pick up run more efficiently. Students need help lining up, picking their fruits and veggies and heading back out to lunch. Please visit the volunteer sign up page.

Parent Information Night and Back to School Night
I look forward to seeing you this Wednesday, August 29th at the 5th grade information night. We have a lot to tell you about our fast approaching trip to Walker Creek during the week of October 15th. This is important for all parents, especially those who have not previously had a 5th grader at Edna! A lot of paperwork will be due for this trip shortly, and we look forward to answering all of your questions on Wednesday!
We will also have Back to School Night on Thursday, September 13th at 5:30pm. Meet in the MPR first and then come to room 32 for my presentation. See you there!

Language Arts:
- Read for 30 minutes and record in your log each night (turn this in every day, including Friday)
- Writing about Reading: Write a paragraph describing a book you enjoyed this summer. Be sure to include important information including the title, author and details about the main character and general plot.
- Summergram due Friday! Students will pick a favorite memory from this summer and draw a picture to represent that special moment. We will share these in class on Friday. These pictures should be an example of each student's best work.
- Invite your parent to the 5th grade information night! (Invitations went home today in your child's binder.)
