Poetry classes will begin on Monday and we are thrilled to have Dr. Matthew Davis and Elizabeth Miller teaching our 5th grade classes this year at Edna.
To learn more about these teachers and their approach to poetry instruction, here's a introduction in their own words:
Poet-educators Dr. Matthew Davis and Elizabeth Miller created The Blue Skies, Bright Star Poetry Project through their Bay Area educational nonprofit, Pseads (“seeds”). Matt and Elizabeth have taught around the Bay Area and internationally for over 15 years, and have backgrounds in literature, creative writing and science. They have taught at all levels, from elementary school through universities, and with communities of all kinds.Among scientists, “Blue Skies” is a term for curiosity-driven research that leads to outcomes not envisioned at the outset. As a way of exploration and discovery, it is also a way of poetry. This project provides a series of interconnected lessons customized to suit the needs and aims of specific school environments and classrooms. It is designed to complement and augment classroom learning, and to support students in exploring their learning from even more angles. It draws on science, history and the words and writings of humanitarians, and aims to support confidence with listening, writing and speaking. Each student is treated as a capable and gifted poet with wisdom, insight and a unique perspective to share. The project has run successfully in the Ross Valley District with all students in Grades 2-8 for the past five years.A huge shout-out to Kiddo! for the funding to make this amazing program possible.
A huge thank you to Kiddo! for the funding to make our poetry study possible.
